In the wake of several pro authors' posts over the last couple of months in which said authors are mystified and/or badly confused by the fanfic itch, we've now got a post from a pro author who has brought immense amounts of common sense to the table.

Jim Hines displays much wisdom, in this matter and in many others.   And he writes good books, too.

I just got my first novel sale, and already I'm facing the situation: Some writers who follow my fanfic writing swear they're going to write fanfic based on my book, and they haven't even read it yet! They know I'd be pretty hypocritical to complain. :-)

I've also only seen the movie -- in fact, I usually see the movie version first and never see it on stage, unless a local high school puts it on. Certainly the changes made can be startling.

Jim Hines has always seemed a sensible man - and boy, howdy does this post fit into that category. Linked and thanked :>
