I've been coming across these more or less accidentally, as folk I've friends-listed (often as a result of reading their work via Yuletide or some other exchange) mention having signed up for something or other. [One of my own motivations for getting involved in challenges and exchanges is to build up my network of fanwriting contacts, which is growing slowly.]

Two recent notices I've seen: RarePairFest is open (I have not signed up for this one), and Cotton Candy Bingo (latest in a long tradition of '"bingo"-themed challenge communities) has recently gone live (that one I did sign up for). I believe there are also bingo communities for AU Bingo, Crossover Bingo, and Kink Bingo, although I haven't signed up for any of these. You might also search LJ, Dreamwidth, and or the collections at AO3 for "bigbang", which is fanspeak for "challenge involving longer works, usually 20K words and up".

While I'm not quite ready for 20K+ challenges, the other sound interesting ;>. What is "Bingo" as a challenge type? (yes, I"m REALLY new to this ;>)

With a bingo challenge, one gets a bingo-card grid of prompts, and the goal is to write stories (or in some cases create other sorts of fanwork) fulfilling each individual prompt in a bingo-formation (straight line on up to blackout, with some variation between challenges as to how points are tabulated and what forms of bingos are accepted). There isn't a gift exchange component, there may or not be a defined group of accepted fandoms, and you can usually exempt yourself from either a few specific prompts or a certain class of prompts. So you're committing to write at least five works, but the window is typically longer than for a gift exchange.
