Dear Scribe: Not Prime Time 2015
Aaaaand here we go again!
I signed up at the tail end of the window for this, but I am as enthusiastic as I've ever been, and will be as grateful for New Stuff To Read as these exchanges invariably make me. So much wonderful material comes out of all of these, and having a bit of it be particularly for me is an ongoing source of delight. So thank you for taking part, and let's get to the good stuff....
My requested fandoms are these:
Gargoyles • any
Kim Possible • any
Sky High • Gwen Grayson
Young Wizards (Diane Duane) • Harry Callahan
Enter your General likes and dislikes
Feel free to wander backward through this journal and my fic on AO3 (linked to your left) to get an idea of my interests; what I write is very much also what I like to read -- and has, over time, added up to rather a variety of fandoms. My past letters for various exchanges are tagged "dear santa" herein; see also "exchange: not prime time" if you like. To summarize, though: text-driven pluses for me include effective use of wit (aka banter aka snark, etc.), as well as strong characterization & dialogue. I value both respect for and clever use of canon (including well-developed AUs -- the plot-driven kind, not the baristas/highschoolers/alt-species kind). I thrive on UST (heavy on both U and T), and am neutral where gen/het/slash is concerned; if the pairing is well-developed, I'll read with an open mind.
I am also a sucker for the well-executed crossover, whether via oblique allusion or head-on fandom collision. Optional Details Being Optional, I have absolutely no expectations along this line -- and these requests in particular are more than usually inward-focused for me. But if your muse's musings wander into crossover territory on their own initiative, feel free to encourage them.
None of my requests call specifically for mature/explicit content. This doesn't mean I don't appreciate sizzling erotica/smut/porn; it's just that my fanfic-reading interests and my e/s/p-reading interests mostly don't tend to intersect. That said, if your muse takes you into explicit territory as you're plotting, I'm willing to follow along for the ride. I have few outright personal squicks save for noncon, incest, or adult/child kinks so long as a given relationship is age- and canon-appropriate. [See the requests for canon-specific notes.]
I have requested single characters in all of these fandoms in the interests of making matching easier, but I am absolutely open -- with very rare exceptions which I'll specify if need be -- to inclusion of other canon characters relevant to a given story. I'm also not opposed to original characters, so long as they fit into the story in context and don't unduly take it over.
Gargoyles (TV) • Any Character
I'm going to leave this one open-ended; I've been revisiting this series lately and am hungry for something new from nearly any perspective (*except* PWP; for me in this series, it's about the relationships rather than the smut). Show me a stylish and deft Xanatos Gambit or a tale of Avalon and its children, redeem Demona (or indulge her more diabolical side), give me Macbeth in a battle of wits with just about anyone, or challenge Elisa with yet another life-defining choice.
If I had to pick a favorite under-appreciated character, it would likely be Macbeth, not least because I am indeed a lifelong Shakespeare buff, because that's one of my favorite plays, and yet this Macbeth is so very much his own man distinct from the play's portrayal. I was deeply amused to find a nugget of Weisman lore, while researching my most recent Gargoyles story, indicating that our Macbeth knew Shakespeare, read the play bearing his name when it originally appeared, and thought well of it. All that said -- I specified "any character" and I meant it. If your muse takes you toward any of the others, singly or in combination, don't hesitate to follow where it leads.
Kim Possible (Cartoon) • Any Character
I’m leaving this wide open: I’m that rare KP fan who reads and enjoys well-done Kigo and K/R with equal glee, and am perfectly happy to see Yori thrown into the mix as well. A couple of ideas: there’s almost no canon interaction between Shego and Yori, which is kind of a shame – putting those two together strikes me as a recipe for comedy gold, high-powered kung fu, or possibly both at once. I also suspect that Yori could out-agent Will Du at least as well as Kim ever did. And I’ve always thought Dr. Director had hidden depths.
I think, based on my recollection of the signup summary, that this request was non-matchable. That said, if you're here by way of a pinch-hit solicitation or seeking for treat opportunities, feel free to scream, leap, and write. This was the fandom that drew me into fic-writing in earnest, and although I've been KP-dormant for quite awhile now, I am still very fond of the characters, the fics, and the series, in all their diverse glory. If you followed the series and have a story burrowing up out of your backbrain, let it grow....
Sky High (2005) • Gwen Grayson
I've always thought that "what happens to Gwen next?" is the biggest question left hanging at the end of the movie. Does she sink even deeper into supervillainy, or might she be redeemable given the right incentive? (I had the ghost of an idea once for a complicated Warren/Gwen story exploring that second possibility; I'd love to see someone else take on the challenge of exploring that pairing. But if your muse takes Gwen in another direction, don't let me stop you; as long as she gets an honest, clear-eyed chance at the spotlight, I'll be a happy recipient.)
While I mention Gwen/Warren above, I emphasize here that I'm entirely open to other possible pairings provided the appropriate foundations are laid (i.e. don't forget that canon does at least initially show her aiming herself at Will). One plot bunny in addition to what I've given above: deity knows her home life growing up had to be deeply, deeply weird given who was raising her....
Young Wizards - Diane Duane • Harry Callahan
This is likely a long shot, but -- with a couple of notable and excellent exceptions -- we really haven't seen enough Harry-centric stories in this fandom. I'd love to see his POV on the challenges of parenting a two-wizard family (before or after Betty's passing). I'd love to see him finally have that conversation with Roshaun's father, or maybe a meeting with Mr. Millman, on the clock or off it. I'd love to see him interacting with Tom and Carl, or even turning up in Ireland for a visit.
This one's pretty self-explanatory, I think, though perhaps a less-than-likely match. If you are drawn to this prompt, my main observation would be that this is one case where I think the requested character doesn't just want, but needs at least one additional player to bounce off of and interact with -- I'm not sure a solo "think" piece is likely to work well for me.
